RESOURCES

While we encourage students to attend our meetings for more one-on-one assistance, here are some resources and pointers courtesy of ROUCI to help students get started and navigate research at UCI.

Students are also welcome to reach us via the "Contact Us" page, or on our instagram for any other questions you may have or assistance you may need.

Finding a Research Lab

General meetings at ROUCI often involve presentations of the latest available positions at a variety of undergraduate research labs at UCI. To get access to the most recent opportunities, we recommend students attend these general meetings.

However, any student is welcome to turn to their

respective UCI department 199 website page for

information covering subject-specific faculty and

research.

During a student's search for the ideal lab it is

important to keep in mind one's goals, desires, and

passions to ensure a lab is fit for them. To best accomplish this, go past the faculty pages and websites; search the professors online, take a look at their teaching styles, read articles they've written about their research, and dive deep into the topic the lab is focused on.

Resumes and CV

A resume provides a summary of a student's education, work experience, and other relevant information that will showcase their qualifications and why they are good fit for research.

2

A cover letter is a document that is typically submitted

along with a resume if asked for by the faculty

member. It is often personalized to a job or lab

position, so they should be specific to each lab

a student is applying to.

A CV, or Curriculum Vitae, is another document often requested by labs when applying. It is meant to provide a more detailed overview of an individual's education, work experience, research experience, publications, presentations and other relevant information.

Tips:

  • When demonstrating an accomplishment, don't omit the results

    • For example, if you've worked on a project, don't simply list the technique or skill, instead say: Accomplished X as measured by Y, doing Z

  • Don't be repetitive, use different words to explain your actions/accomplishments

  • If you're a 1st year, try to refrain from listing APs or high school activities

  • Add skills relevant to the labs you are applying to

  • Avoid adding irrelevant skills

  • If you have a good science GPA or a good GPA within a certain school (related to the position or your major) include it!
